"The aim is to reduce the number of violent assaults and insults against police officers. The bodycam is an excellent tool for increasing the personal safety of colleagues. People who know they are being filmed behave differently," say the colleagues. The cameras were officially presented by the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Interior back in 2019. At the time, the state set up 336 new servers across the state for the use of the technology in cooperation with all district police authorities in order to be able to process the data volumes and meet the highest security standards.
The use of the cameras must be announced
The bodycams are worn at shoulder height on the police uniform. They can be switched on at the touch of a button in critical situations. Secret recordings are not permitted and the use of the cameras must be announced. The footage produced is then automatically transferred to local servers at the authorities and deleted from the camera. The videos are automatically deleted after 14 days, unless they are required as evidence in the prosecution of criminal offenses and administrative offenses.
Intensive training for police officers
Paderborn police officers underwent intensive training in the use of the new equipment. Colleagues also had to get used to using the cameras in their everyday work. That's why the training courses were so important to us. The daily challenges are constantly increasing, which is why resources have to evolve. The bodycams provide this.
